Balkan Chamois Hunting

Artemis Hunting organizes Balkan chamois hunts in Croatia. The Balkan chamois is bigger and has larger horns than the Alpine chamois because winters in the Balkan mountains are much warmer and easier than in the Alps. Since there isn’t as much deep snow, Balkan chamois can easily find food all year round. They also don’t have to waste their strength wading through thick snow or fighting the freezing cold, so all that saved energy helps them grow much bigger and stronger! Hunting them in the mountains of Croatia, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, is authentic as it gets. We hunt them on Velebit and Biokovo mountain. Archaeological analysis of skeletal remains found along the Adriatic coast confirms that chamois inhabited this region as far back as 12,000 years ago. The minimum caliber to use for hunting Balkan chamois is 6,5 Creedmoor. Because they are very tough animals, especially during the rut, which is in November. The best is to shoot them, aiming for the heart and lungs but placed so the bullet also breaks a bone (either shoulder or leg) on the way through; this anchors them on the spot, since even if the shot doesn’t drop them instantly, the broken bone means they can’t run far.  Guests usually combine mouflon and Balkan chamois hunts because both species share the same hunting grounds; only the chamois lives higher than mouflon.
