Understanding the CIC Scoring System for European Mouflon: Gold, Silver & Bronze Rams

If you grow up hunting big game in North America, you speak the language of inches. You know exactly what a 170-inch Whitetail looks like, or what it takes for a Bighorn to cross that legendary 180-inch Boone and Crockett mark.

But when you step off the plane in Europe to hunt Mouflon, the conversation shifts entirely. Suddenly, everyone is talking about “CIC Points” and medal classes-Representative, Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

For a lot of US hunters, this feels like trying to learn a foreign language on the fly. You don’t want to guess what you’re shooting, and you definitely don’t want a surprise bill at checkout because a ram scored higher than you anticipated.

At Artemis Hunting, we believe in total transparency. Here is a simple, no-BS breakdown of how the CIC system works, what these rams actually look like on the mountain, and how we ensure you harvest exactly the class of trophy you came for.

What is the CIC System?

The International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation (CIC) handles trophy scoring in Europe. Unlike Boone and Crockett, which is strictly about total inches of horn and mass, the CIC system uses a metric formula.

It calculates:

  1. The Length: Measured in centimeters along the outer curve of each horn.
  2. The Circumference: Measured at three specific points (the base, the first third, and the second third of the horn) to score the mass.
  3. The Spread: The maximum width between the outer curves of the horns.
  4. The Beauty Points: Points are added for the deepness of the ridges and the elegance of the curl.
  5. The Deductions: Points can be subtracted for severe asymmetry or defects.

The total calculation gives a final score in CIC points. Based on that score, a ram falls into one of four distinct categories.

The Four Trophy Classes: What to Expect

To make things easy, look at how we break down our target rams on the mountain:

1. Representative Class (Up to 185 CIC points)

  • The Look: These are healthy rams that sport a great shape but haven’t quite developed the massive thickness or extreme length needed to medal.
  • The Hunt: A fantastic option for a hunter who wants a true, free-range mountain stalk and an authentic wild sheep experience without the premium price tag of a heavy medal ram.

2. Bronze Medal (185 to 195 CIC points)

  • The Look: This is where the horns start to show real weight. The base of the horn is noticeably thicker, and the curl comfortably drops well below the jawline.
  • The Target: A classic, beautiful European Mouflon trophy that stands out on any trophy room wall.

3. Silver Medal (195 to 205 CIC points)

  • The Look: Heavy, deeply ridged, and wide. A Silver medal ram has significant mass that carries all the way through the first half of the horn. The curls sweep backward elegantly, framing the face with an aggressive, wide profile.
  • The Hunt: These are older, smart rams. Taking a Silver on an open mountain requires a flawless stalk, as these veterans don’t make mistakes.

4. Gold Medal (205+ CIC points)

  • The Look: The holy grail of Mouflon hunting. We are talking massive, thick bases, extreme horn length (often pushing 80–90 cm / 31–35+ inches), and immense depth of ridges. The horns sweep wide and low, often nearly completing a full circle back toward the neck.
  • The Achievement: Croatia is world-renowned for producing free-range Gold medal rams. Harvesting one of these monsters is a lifetime achievement that solidifies your Ovis World Slam milestones.

How We Eliminate the Guesswork on the Mountain

The biggest fear for any traveling hunter is shooting a ram, getting out the tape measure, and finding out it’s a “Gold” when you only budgeted for a “Bronze.”

We don’t let that happen. Before we ever put boots on the ridge, we sit down with you and review our field gallery. We show you real-world photos, just like the ones on our guide chart, of exactly what each medal class looks like on our specific concessions.

You tell us your target tier and your budget. Once we are on the cliffs, our professional 1:1 guides do the heavy lifting. They spot the herd, lock down the rams through high-end spotting scopes, and judge the age and CIC class with expert precision. You will only hear the words “take him” if the ram perfectly fits the class you came across the Atlantic to harvest.

Ready to Pick Your Class?

Whether you are looking for a beautiful Representative ram to kick off your sheep hunting journey, or a heavy-horned Gold medal monster to anchor your collection, we have the terrain and the genetics to make it happen.

The November rut is the prime time to judge and harvest these rams. Drop us a line today, tell us what class of ram you’re dreaming of, and let’s get your dates locked in.
