Marco Polo Sheep Hunting
If you’re looking for a real adventure, this is it. High altitude, tough terrain, and long-range shooting make this a true hunt of a lifetime.
Hunts take place in the rugged Tian Shan mountain range, where elevations commonly range from 3,500 to over 4,500 meters (11,500–14,700 feet).
Altitude can make even experienced hunters feel the effects of fatigue much sooner than they would at sea level. While the pace is adapted to each hunter, a reasonable level of physical fitness will greatly improve both comfort and success during the hunt. We reccommend that you take Diamox to help you with adapting to altitude.
Hunters should expect steep slopes, loose rock, scree fields, narrow ridgelines, and vast alpine basins. The terrain is often open, allowing animals to spot movement from great distances, which is one of the reasons long shots are common. Reaching a mature Marco Polo sheep frequently requires careful glassing, long stalks across exposed mountainsides, and climbs over demanding terrain.
Why hunt Marco Polo Sheep?
Marco Polo sheep have the biggest horns out of all the sheep in the world. Marco Polo sheep live in the Tian Shan (Kyrgyzstan) and the Pamirs (Tajikistan), often called The Roof of the World. Artemis Hunting organizes Marco Polo sheep (Hume Argali) hunts in the Tian Shan, in Kyrgyzstan (near the border with China) successfuly for the last 20 years, since 2006. Hunting in Kyrgyzstan is generally more relaxed and enjoyable than in Tajikistan, thanks to lower elevations, shorter drives, and the use of horses. The hunting season is from August 15 to March 1, but the best time to hunt them is during the rut, which is in December. We hunt them spot and stalk. We hike up early to get to high elevation (above the sheep) because they don’t expect danger from above, so it’s best to get higher than them for a successful hunt. Shot opportunities vary greatly, from 100 meters out to 1000 meters, though most successful shots are taken between 300 to 500 meters. Long-range shooting practice at home, including at different angles, is highly recommended. If you are in the USA, we highly recommend you to visit FTW Ranch for their SAAM training to prepare yourself for hunting with Artemis Hunting. Over the past 20 years, every hunter has had opportunities, and only 4 were unsuccessful, all due to shooting or equipment issues, not because of a lack of game. Every part of the harvested sheep is used by the local community, nothing is left behind. We use a lot of calibers such as .308 Win., .30-06, .300 Win. Mag. and any of them is fine, but we usually recommend the 6.5 PRC, 7 PRC or the 300 PRC because they are not affected that much by the wind, which means they are more forgiving to mistakes, but the .308 Win., .30-06. or the .300 Win. Mag. all have enough stopping power to kill a Marco Polo sheep. Marco Polo sheep hunts are often combined with mid-asian ibex hunts, combo hunts are discounted. Also, if 2 or more hunters want to hunt an animal each, then we approve a discount. Since 2006, Artemis Hunting has established itself as one of the premier hunting travel agencies for organizing Marco Polo sheep hunts. Craig Coote (director of Tier-One) is one of the hunting personalities that chose us to organize their Marco Polo sheep hunting trip.
