If there’s one thing hunters love to debate around the campfire, it’s ballistics. We all have our favorite cartridges, our pet loads, and our theories on what makes the perfect mountain rifle.
But when you pack your bags for a wild, free-range Mouflon hunt on the rugged coastal cliffs of Croatia, you need to leave the standard deer-hunting mindset at home.
Pound-for-pound, a mature Mouflon ram is tougher to put down than a Mid-Asian Ibex in Kyrgyzstan. They are incredibly spooky, heavily muscled, and hard-wired for survival. This is especially true during the rut. When the rams are full of adrenaline and fighting for ewes, their pain tolerance skyrockets. If your shot placement isn’t flawless, a hit ram can take a heavy mountain caliber and still scramble up a vertical cliff like nothing happened.
Add in steep angles, razor-sharp limestone, and the unpredictable, howling Bura wind coming off the sea, and your choice of caliber and bullet becomes critical. You need a setup that cuts through heavy crosswinds and delivers deep, bone-smashing terminal energy.
At Artemis Hunting, we see dozens of different setups on our mountains every season. Here is our real-world, no-BS guide on what to pack and what we use.
The Baseline: .308 Winchester is the Floor
Let’s start with the absolute minimum. If you want to hunt Mouflon with us, the .308 Win is the floor.
Can a smaller caliber like a .243 or a standard 6.5 Creedmoor kill a Mouflon? Sure, under perfect conditions. But wild mountain hunting rarely gives you perfect conditions. When the Bura wind kicks up across deep canyons, small, light bullets get pushed off course too easily. The .308 Win gives you the necessary kinetic energy and bullet weight to punch through dense bone and muscle, even if your shot placement is slightly compromised by a sudden gust.
The Reliable Workhorses: .30-06 Springfield & .300 Win Mag
You can never go wrong with the classics.
- The .30-06 Springfield: It’s been killing game worldwide for over a century for a reason. With a heavy, controlled-expansion bullet, the aught-six has more than enough thumping power to anchor a rutting ram right in his tracks.
- The .300 Win Mag: If you want absolute insurance against the wind and distance, the .300 Win Mag is a spectacular choice. It shoots flat, hits like a freight train, and minimizes wind drift beautifully. It’s a favorite among guests who want zero doubts when they squeeze the trigger.
The Modern Contender: 6.5 PRC
If you are a fan of modern, high-BC (Ballistic Coefficient) cartridges, the 6.5 PRC definitely gets the job done. Unlike its smaller cousin, the 6.5 PRC pushes a heavier bullet at much higher velocities. It cuts through the coastal crosswinds, has very manageable recoil for steep-angle shooting, and delivers excellent terminal performance on mountain sheep.
The Artemis Champion: Our Current Favorite is the 7 PRC
If you were to ask our guides right now what the ultimate, perfect cartridge is for our specific mountains, the answer is unanimous: the 7 PRC.
Hornady absolutely nailed it with this cartridge for mountain hunting. The 7 PRC gives you the flat-shooting, wind-defying benefits of a modern long-range caliber, but with the heavy-hitting sectional density of a true 7mm magnum, all without the punishing recoil of a .300 RUM or .338. When we are glassing a Gold-medal ram at 300 yards across a windy canyon, the 7 PRC gives our hunters the ultimate confidence against the elements. It is a masterpiece of modern ballistics, and it’s currently our number one recommendation.
Bullet Selection: What We Actually Use
The caliber is only half the equation; the bullet doing the work is what actually brings the ram home. Because Mouflons are incredibly hard on the bullet, we strongly advise against soft, rapidly fragmenting deer bullets or ultra-thin competition match rounds.
Our team has tested countless factory loads on these cliffs, and right now, these are our top recommendations:
- Norma Bondstrike: This is currently our absolute favorite. It features a spectacular ballistic coefficient that fights the wind, paired with a bonded core that ensures deep penetration and devastating energy transfer on tough, rutting rams.
- Federal Terminal Ascent: Another phenomenal premium option. It tracks beautifully in the wind and features a solid copper shank that guarantees deep penetration through heavy shoulder bones.
- Geco Express: If you are looking for a reliable, budget-friendly factory option that doesn’t sacrifice performance, this is a solid choice. It delivers great expansion and flat trajectories at typical mountain ranges.
